history
|
The first documentation of Lech was in 1059. Around 1300 the Walsers settled here from the Swiss Canton of Wallis. The town’s name comes from the River Lech, which can be traced back to "Licca", meaning stone water. The population was poor, surviving off the meagre proceeds from cattle-breeding and dairy farming. The construction of the Flexen Road (1895 – 1900) brought hopes of a better future for the 340 inhabitants at the time.
In 1925 the Lech ski school was founded. The first lifts were built in the year 1939 on the Schlegelkopf. The town experienced a great boom after WWII caused by the appearance of tourism.
The name of Zürs appears for the first time in a purchase contract from the year 1416. The first ski class was held in Zürs in 1906.
Austria’s first ski-lift was built in Zürs in 1938.
