lech - a forward looking community

The community of Lech is committed to a healthy environment far beyond its own narrow interests. Already in the early 90s, when many tourist spots did not give second thought to this issue, the responsible authorities increasingly committed themselves to environmental protection, and during recent years they also have achieved measurable results. For instance, 10 years ago, in the course of redesigning the traffic situation, the air quality was analyzed. As it turned out, air pollution was a difficult problem to control due to exhaust gases and burning of fuels for heating individual houses. It turned out that air pollution was mainly a result of traffic and private heating systems. Lech Zürs made a commitment: To relieve traffic related emissions, the Arlberg mountain area very early introduced a public transportation system. The free bus system in Lech Zürs tries to limit private traffic to a minimum. Once guests arrive at the resort, they can leave their car at their accommodation and use the local buses free daily from 8:00 am to 7:30 pm. At 7:30 pm the local bus becomes "James", running until 4:00 am. James provides connections between the locations of Oberlech, Stubenbach, Zürs and Zug every half hour and is ideally suited for all Apres-Ski-Bunnies and other night-revelers. The night revellers by bus costs only Euro 3,63 / US$3.00) per evening and can be used without any limit.

The challenge of the environmental burden due to private heating systems was met in the middle of the 90s with the project of a remote heat supply in the form of a heating power plant based on biomass. After 6 months of construction it was completed in 1999. Fuel is provided from wood that can no longer be sold in the form of wood chips purchased from farmers in the immediate neighborhood and other slash and refuse wood. Long term, a large part of the fuel will be harvested from the surrounding forests and waste wood from areas struck by avalanches. The biomass heating plant is located at the entrance to the community of Lech and has been operating since November 1999 and has made a substantial contribution to the reduction of pollutants in the air. Additional biomass heating plants are planned for Zürs and Oberlech.

An additional advantage for the environment is the tunnel system in Oberlech. In summer, this part of the community can be reached by private road from Lech; from December to April, however, it is blocked to all automobile traffic. The only connection is made by cable car that runs from 7:00 am to 1:00 am. The tunnel system is 770 m long, and with very few exceptions, connects to all the hotels, relocates all the supply and waste removal traffic in the car free area from the surface to the underground. Luggage of arriving and departing visitors is brought by container by the cable car to Oberlech, then conveyed by elevator into the transshipping facilities and then distributed by electric carts to the various hotels. The remaining supply and waste removal, such as groceries, beverages, is taken care of by individual suppliers via street and the entrance tunnel to the transshipping facility from where electric carts again transport the supply to the various institutions. Advantage: The visitor experiences true nature without transportation noise and all logistics can be carried out underground, independent of weather conditions and they are environmentally sound. The tunnel system of Oberlech is a result of a cooperative initiative by private companies and the community as such and was over 60 % financed by the individual hotels.
